(BUDAPEST, HUNGARY) – The Hungarian government has admitted that the seizure of 31 billion Hungarian Forints (approximately 91.5 million US Dollars) from a Ukrainian bank convoy is being treated as a ransom to force the reopening of a Russian oil pipeline. The funds, consisting of cash and gold bricks, were intercepted by Hungarian authorities using an armoured personnel carrier and machine guns. While the Ukrainian bank employees were released, Hungarian Minister Janos Lazar confirmed that the assets remain in Hungarian custody pending the resumption of oil flows through the Druzhba pipeline.
The incident has been described as a state-sponsored robbery after Hungarian officials deported the bank couriers but retained the currency and bullion as evidence. Despite the money being in sealed bank packaging and originating from a legitimate transfer from Austria, Minister Lazar stated that the funds will not be returned until the pipeline damaged by the Russian dictator is reopened. Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been accused of using the stolen assets to pressure Ukraine into restoring the transit of cheap Russian oil.
International observers note that the current political tension may shift following the Hungarian elections scheduled for 12 April 2026. Recent polling data indicates that the main opposition party, Tisza, led by Peter Magyar, currently holds approximately 53% of the vote among decided voters. In contrast, Viktor Orban and his Fidesz party are polling at 39%. Despite the potential for a change in Hungarian leadership, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has indicated that Slovakia is prepared to continue blocking European Union loans to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.
The European Union currently requires unanimous approval for several measures, including a 90 billion Euro (approximately 98 billion US Dollars) loan for Ukraine. Prime Minister Fico has stated that he would use his veto to maintain pressure on Kyiv, even if Viktor Orban is removed from power. Critics have described both leaders as serving the interests of the Russian dictator rather than those of the European Union or NATO. The ongoing dispute remains a significant obstacle to European solidarity as Ukraine continues to defend itself against Russian aggression.
