(JUBA) – The Juba Electricity Distribution Company (JEDCO) has issued an updated clarification on the application of Monthly Service Charges across all customer categories, while also sharing separate notices on planned power interruptions and ongoing enforcement against illegal electricity connections.
The company said the clarification aims to ensure transparency and help customers understand when and how monthly fees are applied, especially following recent public questions.
Updated Monthly Service Charge Structure
JEDCO has confirmed the following service charge rates for each customer category:
| Customer Category | Monthly Fee (USD) |
|---|---|
| Domestic: Below or equal to 100 kWh | 0.00 |
| Domestic: Above 100 kWh | 2.00 |
| Commercial | 5.00 |
| Government | 3.00 |
| Industrial | 5.00 |
How the Domestic Fee Works
JEDCO clarified that the USD 2 fee for domestic users applies only when a customer’s total monthly electricity purchases exceed 100 kWh.
-
Domestic customers who consume 100 kWh or less in a month will not pay any service charge.
-
The charge is applied once per month, not on every transaction.
-
The fee is deducted only at the moment the customer’s purchases cross the 100 kWh point.
If a domestic customer makes several electricity purchases during the month, the system monitors the cumulative total.
-
When the total remains ≤ 100 kWh, no fee is applied.
-
If a purchase brings the monthly total to over 100 kWh, the system deducts the USD 2 charge during that specific transaction.
Why the Monthly Service Charge Exists
JEDCO explained that the fee supports key operational costs necessary to maintain and improve electricity supply. Funds from the service charge help cover:
-
Routine maintenance work
-
Emergency response services
-
Grid stabilisation
-
Upgrades and modernisation
-
Infrastructure development to reduce outages
According to the company, the structure is intended to keep the system fair while protecting low-consumption households and ensuring long-term reliability for all users, including commercial and industrial customers who rely heavily on stable electricity for operations.

Public Warning on Illegal Electricity Connections
JEDCO has also renewed its public warning that illegal connections remain a criminal offence under national laws. The company said that anyone caught installing or paying for unauthorised connections will face charges for electricity theft.
The company urged customers to report suspicious activities to the toll-free line 319, saying that illegal connections pose safety risks, increase operational costs, interrupt power flow, and undermine fairness among paying customers.
