(JUBA COUNTY) – Electricity Firm Warns Against Informal Payments

The Juba Electricity Distribution Company (JEDCO) has issued a strong reminder to customers that its staff are not permitted to accept tips, gifts, or any form of inducement for services provided. The company says the notice is part of its commitment to improve accountability and deliver fair services to all customers in Juba and surrounding areas.

The electricity distributor explained that some customers continue to offer money or gifts to staff in exchange for services such as new meter connections, pole erections, handling of complaints, or assessments. JEDCO warned that such practices undermine integrity, create unfair advantages, and may result in disciplinary or legal action against those involved.

According to the company, payments for any service must only be made following an official quotation, and every transaction must be supported by an official receipt. Customers have been advised to reject any requests for payments outside official procedures.

JEDCO also called on customers to report suspected misconduct, bribery, or corruption at its service centres or directly to management. Reports may be submitted confidentially through suggestion boxes, via email, or by contacting service centre managers. The company assured that all reports will be treated with discretion and acted upon promptly.

JEDCO noted that its operations must remain fair to all customers without favouritism, regardless of income levels or connections.

In a statement, JEDCO reaffirmed its commitment to providing impartial, high quality electricity services and urged customers to cooperate in maintaining integrity. The company said that its aim is not only to expand access to power but also to ensure that services are delivered fairly and without corruption.

The notice, issued on 11 September 2025, stressed that JEDCO’s success in serving the people of South Sudan depends on cooperation from both staff and customers in building a culture of honesty and accountability.
