(JUBA) – The Juba City Council has launched a large scale road rehabilitation campaign aimed at improving transport infrastructure, sanitation and public access to essential services across the capital. The initiative is being implemented under the leadership of Mayor Christopher Swaka and his three deputies, in partnership with the Government of Central Equatoria State.
Speaking at the launch held in Hai Dar el Salaam, Mayor Swaka said the programme forms part of the 100-day priority plan of Governor Lt. Gen. Rabi Mujung Emmanuel, which seeks to deliver visible improvements in infrastructure and service delivery.
“The campaign focuses on enhancing road connectivity, improving sanitation, and ensuring easier access to healthcare and public facilities. Roads are the backbone of our daily lives; they connect people, enable access to hospitals, and support economic activities,” said Mayor Swaka. “We are committed to making Juba’s roads safer and more reliable for everyone.”
The mayor stressed that maintaining public roads should not be left solely to government authorities, noting that communities also play a key role in ensuring that infrastructure remains in good condition.
“The Government is the people, and the people are the Government,” he said. “We appeal to all residents to cooperate with us and take care of these roads. They are public assets meant to serve everyone.”
Mayor Swaka also issued a warning against illegal construction and encroachment on road reserves, saying such activities threaten the durability and safety of infrastructure.
The rehabilitation project began in Hai Dar el Salaam and will expand to key neighbourhoods such as Custom, Atlabara, St. Kizito, Nyakuron, and Rock City. The upgraded road linking St. Kizito and the National Security Headquarters will provide an alternative corridor to the main route behind Parliament and Airport Road, helping to ease congestion and improve urban mobility.
The Juba City Council has called on residents to remain patient and supportive as the works continue. Officials say the project represents a practical commitment to improving service delivery, enhancing the city’s infrastructure, and ensuring that all citizens benefit from better road access.
