(KUAJOK, WARRAP STATE) – Authorities in Kuajok Municipality have introduced a nighttime restriction on pedestrian movement in the town’s main market area. The measure took effect this week banning movement between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. and aims to reduce cases of theft that have been affecting traders after business hours.
According to municipal officials, the new directive is intended to enhance security for businesses and protect shop owners who have suffered repeated break-ins and losses in recent months. The restriction applies to all pedestrians within the main market area during the specified hours.
Police patrols will be stationed throughout the night to ensure full compliance. Those found loitering near shops or within the restricted zone during the curfew will be detained and presented before a court for further action.
The Assistant Officer for Hygiene and Sanitation in Kuajok Municipality, John Maluil Ajing, confirmed that the police have been given complete authority to enforce the order. He said the decision followed an increase in thefts reported after traders close for the day.
Local business owners have expressed cautious support for the move, noting that while the restriction may temporarily limit night activities, it could help reduce property losses and improve confidence among shopkeepers.
Street vendors and food sellers who usually operate late into the evening are among those most affected. Some traders have requested that the municipality consider providing secure lighting or allowing exceptions for those with business permits.
Authorities have not indicated how long the restriction will remain in force but said it will be reviewed based on its effectiveness in reducing theft cases.
