(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The authorities of Yei River County held a one-day dialogue on land rights and urban planning on 12 January 2026, bringing together county officials, traditional leaders, elders, and landowners. The meeting focused on land ownership, distribution, and planning in Yei.

Hon. Emmanuel Taban Seme, Commissioner of Yei River County, welcomed the participation of traditional leaders and elders, describing the dialogue as an important step toward promoting peace, unity, and sustainable development in the county.

He said that 2026 has been designated a year of development and stressed the need for a comprehensive social survey to guide proper land allocation and planning. The Commissioner also emphasised that residents who have lived in Yei for a long time, regardless of ethnic background, have the right to own land. He said inclusive land policies are essential to prevent future disputes.

The Commissioner further encouraged Boma Land Committees to work closely with Payam administrations to avoid misunderstandings and ensure transparency in land management.

The Paramount Chief of the area praised landowners for supporting the town demarcation process. He said orderly demarcation will improve planning and create opportunities for meaningful development in Yei.

Speaking during the dialogue, Hillary Lugala Godo said that Yei belongs to its people and called for fair access to land through transparent demarcation. He highlighted plans to zone the town and emphasised the importance of a clear land management policy to protect community land rights. He also requested that local authorities provide financial support to the housing department to carry out demarcation activities effectively.

Former Yei Town Payam Director, Araba Na Fox, described the dialogue as a key platform to improve accountability in plot distribution. She praised local elders for promoting fair land allocation and reducing corruption.

Able Sebit commended the Commissioner for engaging landlords on responsible land distribution and urged county leadership to consider allocating land for public and community use.

Lowuya Morris, Executive Chief and Acting Land Chairperson, called on landlords to maintain professionalism and integrity in land division, warning against corrupt practices.

Elder Charles Lugala stressed the need for continuous dialogue and social surveys to prevent land-related conflicts. He also urged the government to accelerate land demarcation across Yei River County, noting that potential investors are ready to engage once clear land systems are in place.

The dialogue concluded with a call for ongoing collaboration among government institutions, traditional authorities, and communities to ensure equitable land governance and sustainable development in Yei River County.
