(WAU, WESTERN BAHR EL GHAZAL STATE) – Construction has begun on the Kubri Sitta Bridge, a project expected to improve transport and ease movement between Wau South and Wau North. The state government launched the project on Monday, saying it is part of efforts to improve basic public infrastructure in Western Bahr el Ghazal.

The project is being carried out by Eyat Construction Company and is funded by the state government. It is scheduled to take five months to complete. Officials said the bridge will support trade, improve travel between neighbourhoods and help local businesses and farmers move goods more easily.

Residents from areas including Hai Dinka, Fahal, Zande and Hai Jadid attended the ceremony. Many welcomed the project, saying the bridge had been needed for years. Some members of the community displayed a sign thanking Governor Sharif Daniel Sharif for beginning the work and calling for street lighting along the route to improve safety at night.

The reference to Governor Sharif as “Ibrahim Traoré” – comparing him to the Burkinabé leader known for his active public initiatives – drew applause from the gathering. Those in attendance said they viewed the governor’s involvement in infrastructure development as positive for the state.

Chief Christopher Kiir Deng of Hai Jadid said the community has faced challenges due to poor road connections and limited electricity. He asked the state government to extend lighting to the new bridge and surrounding roads to support security and small businesses.

The state government has also recently inspected a new housing project in Khor Malang, Jur River County. The project aims to respond to challenges faced by residents of the Naivasha camp in Wau Municipality. Officials said the housing plan is being developed to provide more suitable living conditions.

Local leaders say both the bridge and housing projects reflect ongoing government efforts to address infrastructure gaps and improve living conditions. However, they also said stable electricity supply remains a priority for many communities.

Residents hope completion of the bridge will increase access to markets, schools and health centres, and support local businesses.

The state government has not released the total cost of the project.
