(JUBA) – The Ministry of Trade and Industry held a presentation in Juba aimed at improving South Sudan’s trade legal structures and preparing the country to comply with the World Trade Organization’s requirements. The session was led by the Premier Choice Law Group and attended by senior ministry officials.

Those present included the Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Atong Kuol Manyang, the Technical Advisor Hon. Simon Nyang Anei, the Undersecretary Hon. Ustaz Yel Luol Koor and the Director General. The briefing was delivered by Advocate Diing Bul, Managing Partner of Premier Choice Law Group.

The presentation focused on the legal frameworks needed to support South Sudan’s efforts to complete the WTO 173 Questionnaire. This document is a key requirement for countries seeking to align national trade laws with international standards. Officials stated that improved regulations would help strengthen the country’s trade environment and support long term economic development.

The session reviewed gaps in trade policies and legal instruments and discussed steps required to build a clear framework that can support domestic businesses and international trade partners. It also placed emphasis on competition policies, contract laws, import and export regulations, and dispute settlement mechanisms.

In her closing remarks, Minister Atong thanked the legal team for their work and said the ministry is ready to begin practical steps to address the issues raised. She stated that trade activities continue to face challenges due to delays in policy reform and the absence of clear legal standards for businesses.

She also said the ministry is working to finalise competition legislation that will help ensure fairness in the market. According to the minister, strengthening the legal system will allow South Sudan to build investor confidence and improve its trading position both regionally and globally.
