(JUBA) – The Ministry of Transport has announced plans to recruit more than 230 new staff for its Railways and River Transport Departments over the next two weeks. The recruitment aims to address staffing shortages and strengthen operational capacity in these strategic sectors.

The announcement followed a meeting of a joint technical committee between the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Public Service to review technical requirements for upcoming job advertisements.

Under Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, César Oliha, said the committee is identifying the required positions, qualifications, and technical details for the recruitment process. Meanwhile, Daniel Atem, Director General of Recruitment and Selection at the Ministry of Public Service and Human Resource Development, said the committee will submit its final plan to the Minister within two weeks for public announcement.

Atem explained that the committee is finalising job descriptions and terms of reference for the 231 positions to be filled. He encouraged citizens to prepare to apply once the recruitment process is announced.

“We are now working on job descriptions and terms of reference for each position. We have 231 positions that need to be filled. I’m calling on citizens to be ready,” he said.

This recruitment follows an earlier announcement in November 2025, when the Ministry of Transport revealed plans to hire 400 employees in a nationwide drive to strengthen staffing across its departments. The new roles focus on improving service delivery in the railway and river transport sectors, which are critical for trade, mobility, and economic development in South Sudan.

A simple summary of the recruitment plan is shown below:

Department Number of Positions Purpose
Railways 120 Strengthen rail operations and maintenance
River Transport 111 Improve river transport services and logistics
Total 231 Address staffing shortages across transport sectors

The Ministry said the recruitment is part of broader efforts to modernise South Sudan’s transport system, attract skilled professionals, and ensure efficient service delivery in the rail and river networks.
