(JUBA CITY) – The Ministry of Transport has carried out a detailed inspection of Juba International Airport and the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority headquarters as part of ongoing efforts to improve the country’s aviation sector.

The visit, led by the Minister of Transport, Rizik Zakaria Hassan, took place on 2 December 2025. The delegation was received by the Director General of the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority, John Woja Elinana, together with the General Manager of Juba International Airport, Eng. Kat Moseti Monyjok.

The minister and his team toured several major construction and upgrade works at the airport. These included the renovation of the passenger terminal, installation of new power generators and lighting systems, completion of the perimeter fence, improvements to drainage, construction of airport parking areas, upgrades to the control tower, and inspection of the fire brigade and meteorology facilities. The delegation also reviewed progress on the new entry gate and the modern Air Traffic Management building.

During the visit, the Minister outlined several key priorities for strengthening the aviation sector. He said the Ministry is working to build a strong regulatory system that aligns with international aviation standards and places safety at the centre of operations. He also stressed the importance of developing a skilled workforce able to support the sector’s growth.

Other areas of focus include the creation of a clear policy framework that will guide long term development, along with full implementation of the Master Plan for Juba International Airport. The plan aims to position the airport as a future regional hub in East and Central Africa. The Minister also called for transparency and strong performance measures in all aviation-related contracts to ensure high quality and timely delivery.

The visit brought together senior government and aviation officials, including SSCAA Board Chairperson Samuel Yanga Mikaya, who also serves as First Deputy Governor of the Bank of South Sudan. Board Member Lt Gen. Baak Akoon Baak, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport Caesar Oliha, other SSCAA board members, and senior management staff were also present. Their participation showed a united commitment to improving the aviation system.

Officials said the projects underway represent a major step toward improving safety, passenger experience and efficiency at South Sudan’s busiest airport. The Ministry of Transport noted that its engagement reflects the government’s wider plan to upgrade national infrastructure and improve South Sudan’s connection to the region.

The SSCAA restated its commitment to improve aviation safety, strengthen its institutional capacity and support modernisation efforts. The Authority said these initiatives are part of a national vision to build a reliable and internationally compliant aviation system.
