(NIMULE, MAGWI COUNTY) – The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards has rejected three trucks of maize flour imported into the country after inspections found that the consignment did not meet national quality standards. The shipment was returned to its country of origin from the customs border in Eastern Equatoria State.

In related news on 21 November 2025, the Bureau joined national leaders, development partners, and key stakeholders in Juba to commemorate World Food Day 2025. The event focused on the theme, “Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a Better Life for All: Leave No One Behind.” Executive Director Hon. Gloria Nyoka Joseph stressed that ensuring access to safe, nutritious, and sustainable food is a shared responsibility of government, private sector, farmers, and development partners.

The Bureau highlighted its role in safeguarding public health through enforcement of national, regional, and international standards. Efforts include strengthening laboratory capacity, improving food safety regulations, and collaboration with partners such as the East African Community, FAO, WHO, and the Codex Alimentarius Commission. Hon. Joseph emphasised that strong food standards are essential for safer food systems, fair trade, and healthier communities.

In the same week, South Sudan successfully hosted the East African Community Technical Committee on Food Hygiene and Safety Management at Palm Africa Hotel on 21 November 2025. Experts from national standards bodies across the region attended the Regional Harmonization Meeting to advance the regional Food Hygiene Standard.

In her closing remarks, Hon. Gloria Nyoka Joseph reaffirmed South Sudan’s commitment to regional food standardization and its readiness to host future technical committee engagements. Delegates shared insights and practical strategies to improve food hygiene and safety across East Africa, demonstrating regional dedication to public health and fair trade.
