(JUBA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit has called on the newly appointed leaders of Western Equatoria State to dedicate themselves to restoring stability, social harmony, and peace in the state, which has been struggling with insecurity and communal violence.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held on Friday, 15 August 2025, at State House in Juba, the President told the officials that they carry a heavy responsibility to resolve the challenges facing the state.
James Altaib Berapai was sworn in as the new Governor of Western Equatoria, with Justin Joseph Marona as his Deputy Governor. They took the oath of office alongside James Mawich Makuach, the new Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, and Yien Chan Ruei, the incoming Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning.
President Kiir instructed Minister Mawich to make the provision of clean and safe drinking water a priority for communities across the country, noting that access to water is an essential part of improving livelihoods.
The President stressed the importance of cooperation between national and state leaders, saying that meeting the expectations of citizens requires unity and commitment. He urged the new appointees to put aside political differences and work together for the good of the people.
Western Equatoria has in recent years faced rising communal clashes, forced displacement, and other security concerns. The new leaders are expected to move quickly to implement peace initiatives, improve community relations, and restore public confidence in state institutions.
