(AWEIL, NORTHERN BAHR EL GHAZAL) – The Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Ministry of Finance has presented a 40.5 billion South Sudanese Pounds (SSP) budget proposal for the 2025 to 2026 financial year, outlining significant allocations for education, health and infrastructure. At the current market exchange rate of $1 to 7,100 SSP, the proposed budget is equal to about $5.7 million.
The draft budget was submitted to the State Legislative Assembly on Monday. According to officials, the plan aims to improve essential public services in all five counties of the state.
State lawmaker Mayen Kon Akot said legislators are ready to consider and adopt the proposal, adding that the allocations reflect priority needs within communities.
He said the Ministry of Finance has proposed 16 billion SSP for education, equal to about $2.25 million, which is expected to support teacher payments, school rehabilitation and learning materials. The health sector is set to receive 1.3 billion SSP, which is about $183,000, to help improve health centres and support medical supplies.
For infrastructure, the proposal covers 448 million SSP, equal to about $63,000, for projects such as road repairs across the state. Akot said Northern Bahr el Ghazal has several roads that require urgent rehabilitation. He also noted the need to build county hospitals in each of the five county headquarters to help close service gaps in rural areas.
Officials say the State Assembly will review the budget in detail before approval. The proposal comes at a time when many state institutions continue to depend on limited resources while service demands increase.
