(LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM) – The Russian dictator is currently facing significant domestic instability as a fifth member of his inner circle faces arrest for corruption. Kremlinologist Diane Francis, a non-resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, reports that Vladislav Surkov, the figure credited with inventing the current Russian government structure, has disappeared.
This follows the detention of several high ranking generals and officers accused of embezzling millions of dollars intended for infrastructure and troop support in occupied areas of Ukraine. Reports indicate that recent internet outages in Moscow fuelled public speculation regarding a potential military coup, though the regime remains in control.
On the international front, Donald Trump has faced criticism for easing sanctions on Russian oil exports. The administration suspended sanctions for an 11 day period, claiming the move was necessary to dampen global oil prices following the closure of the Straits of Hormuz by Iran.
Analysts, however, describe the move as a token gesture to the Russian dictator that has failed to significantly impact market prices, which currently involve approximately 100,000 barrels. This shift occurs as the Russian dictator provides intelligence to Iran for drone and ballistic missile strikes against United States military bases in the Middle East, resulting in the deaths of American service personnel. Mr Trump has publicly dismissed these concerns, comparing the Russian intelligence sharing to United States support for Kyiv.
The strategic situation in the Middle East has created a rupture in the NATO alliance. Mr Trump has reportedly threatened to withdraw 50,000 American troops from Germany and similar contingents from Japan after these allies refused to join a coalition operation against Iran.
While the United States administration claims it should not spend 1,000,000,000 US Dollars (approximately £785,000,000) per day to secure cheap oil for Europe, European leaders maintain they were not consulted before the conflict began. British and French naval forces remain focused on the Mediterranean and North Atlantic, lacking the specialist capabilities required for a sustained campaign in the Straits of Hormuz.
In Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has transitioned the conflict into a digital war, creating what analysts describe as a digital killing zone. Using the Flamingo drone and the new FP7 ballistic missile, Ukrainian forces have successfully frozen front lines and targeted Russian oil refineries and airports near Moscow.
Current estimates place Russian casualties at 1,300,000, a figure comparable to the population of Philadelphia. Although the Kremlin has expressed a theoretical willingness to engage in peace talks, it has rejected European mediation, insisting on dealing exclusively with the Trump administration.
President Zelenskyy remains resolute, signing independent defence contracts with American allies and establishing drone manufacturing facilities near Cambridge in the United Kingdom to ensure long term defence.
