(LONDON, UK) – South Sudanese-American model Anok Yai has been named Model of the Year at the 2025 British Fashion Awards in London, using her acceptance speech to call for peace in her home country.
The 27 year old, speaking at the Royal Albert Hall, encouraged “little Black girls” to embrace their identity, telling them that their “colour is not a curse” and that they are “worthy,” “capable,” and “more powerful” than they may realise.
Anok Yai has become one of the fashion industry’s most influential figures, appearing in major campaigns, magazine covers, and international runway shows. Her rise to prominence began in 2017, when a photo of her at a Howard University homecoming event went viral, capturing global attention and launching her modelling career.
Her recognition at the British Fashion Awards was one of the night’s most celebrated moments, highlighting both her impact on the global fashion industry and her ongoing commitment to empowerment and advocacy for South Sudanese communities.
The award also brings international attention to South Sudan, with Yai emphasising the importance of peace and stability as part of her message, alongside encouraging young women and girls to recognise their potential and pursue opportunities confidently.
