(JUBA) – Garang Mathew Jok, a South Sudanese man once known for supporting monogamy, has stirred widespread discussion across social media after announcing his second marriage in a bold Facebook post.
The post, made on Tuesday, featured Jok using football related language to introduce his new wife.
“New season, new signing. Building an empire!” he wrote, sparking immediate reactions from followers who were surprised by his shift from advocating single wife relationships to embracing polygamy.
The comment drew a variety of responses, including criticism from those who pointed to his previous support for monogamy.
“You should have allowed little mama Grace to enjoy at least two more seasons before signing,” one user replied, referring to his first wife.
Another comment highlighted a widely held cultural belief: “No matter how much a Dinka man loves you, keep in mind he’s a polygamist by nature. If not today, then tomorrow.”
Jok defended his decision by comparing marriage to the expansion of religious institutions.
“Even the church has branches. Why do you expect my love not to have branches?” he posted.
Polygamy continues to be a common practice, particularly among the Dinka and Nuer ethnic groups, where some men may marry up to 20 wives.
| Group | Common Marriage Practice | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dinka | Polygamy (2–20 wives) | Culturally accepted |
| Nuer | Polygamy | Often tied to cattle wealth |
| Urban Youth | Increasing Monogamy | Influenced by education and church |
