(NAIROBI) – South Sudanese students studying at the University of Nairobi visited the South Sudan Embassy in Kenya on Thursday, where they held discussions with Ambassador Anthony Kon, the newly appointed Head of Mission.

The delegation, representing the wider South Sudanese student community in Kenya, delivered a formal letter congratulating Ambassador Kon on his appointment. The meeting also served as an opportunity for the students to express concerns regarding their academic experiences and challenges they face living and studying in a foreign country.

One of the main issues raised was financial hardship. Many students reported ongoing struggles with tuition fees and basic living expenses. Additionally, several students brought up problems related to immigration, including permit renewals and visa delays, which they said affected their academic progress and legal status in Kenya.

Ambassador Kon welcomed the visit, noting the importance of direct engagement with South Sudanese citizens abroad. He praised the students for their resilience and encouraged them to remain focused on their education despite the challenges.

He also stressed the need for unity among South Sudanese students and advised them to observe the laws and regulations of their host country. “You are not only students but also representatives of South Sudan,” he said. “Your behaviour and dedication reflect on the entire nation.”

The Ambassador further urged the students to consider returning to South Sudan after completing their studies to contribute to the country’s development.

“The future of our nation lies in your hands,” Kon stated. “We count on you to be ambassadors of peace, discipline, and knowledge, not only while in Kenya but when you return to build our country.”

The Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to support South Sudanese students and expressed willingness to strengthen communication channels between the student body and the diplomatic mission. Officials said they would continue to work toward creating a collaborative environment to assist students in achieving both academic and personal success.
