A South Sudanese woman has made history with her appointment as a referee assessor for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers by FIFA.

Akon Paul Ben Deng, the sole female referee instructor from South Sudan accredited at the continental level, will be participating in the World Cup qualifier between Namibia and São Tomé and Príncipe on September 9, 2025.

The match is scheduled to take place in Francistown, Botswana.

Mrs. Deng will be responsible for evaluating the performance of an international officiating team from Niger, which comprises Referee Sadou Ali Brahamou, first assistant referee Yacouba Abdoul Aziz, and second assistant referee Ousmana Fousseini Aboubacar.

Acting as the fourth official will be Ahamadou Alou Moussa, with Zimbabwe’s Bwanya Tendayi serving as the match commissioner.

Akon’s appointment marks a significant milestone for South Sudan, being the only woman within the South Sudan Football Federation (SSFF) holding roles as a referee assessor and technical trainer.

FIFA’s recognition of Mrs. Deng points to her personal dedication and mirrors the increasing prominence of South Sudanese officials in international football.

In a statement to media after her appointment, Mrs. Akon, also a CECAFA Technical Instructor and regional football expert, expressed her sentiments: “This accomplishment serves as a strong source of motivation for referees in South Sudan and the region. It demonstrates that with dedication and professionalism, our officials can make an impact on the global stage.”

She added, “Being selected for FIFA matches is a notable achievement that reflects perseverance and hard work. I am grateful for the support I have received and even the challenges I faced, as they have contributed to shaping my career.”

“I urge the Football Federation to enhance referee training and concentrate on nurturing female referees. Empowering women in officiating will enrich our sport and inspire future generations. Together, we can establish a more inclusive community of referees,” she emphasised.
