(GOGRIAL WEST COUNTY) – The Governor of Warrap State, Ambassador Bol Wek Agoth, made an unannounced visit to Akon Primary Health Care Centre on Wednesday following reports of a cholera outbreak in the area. The Governor was received by the Commissioner of Gogrial West County, Hon. Victor Wek Koor, alongside senior officials.
During the visit, the State Minister of Health, Hon. Abak Yel Madot, accompanied by the Rapid Response Team from Juba and technical staff from the State Ministry, briefed the Governor on the situation. She confirmed that 168 cases of cholera had been registered, with five people losing their lives due to complications linked to the disease.
Governor Agoth told reporters that his decision to travel to Akon was driven by the urgency of protecting lives, despite his ongoing tour to disseminate details of the State of Emergency across Warrap. He said the outbreak highlighted the need for better preparedness and stronger local systems to prevent future crises.
The Governor stressed the importance of public awareness campaigns, personal and community hygiene, and improved drainage in Akon Town. He urged county authorities to prioritise urban planning, roads and drainage systems to reduce risks of waterborne diseases.
“We have to build roads, plan cities and make our communities liveable,” Governor Agoth said, calling on county leaders and residents to support proper demarcation of Akon Town and to embrace long term infrastructure projects.
He also acknowledged the role of humanitarian partners such as Goal and Action Against Hunger (ACF) in responding to the outbreak, noting that their work has been vital in saving lives. The Governor further recognised the contribution of Awan Muorkua youth, led by Joseph Kuel Garang, who mobilised community support to complement the official response.
Before returning to the State capital, the Governor inspected facilities including Akon International Airport and Atuel Tung Primary School. He also visited the ancestral home of President Salva Kiir Mayardit in Akon.
