(JUBA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit held a high level meeting with leaders of South Sudan’s political parties on Wednesday to plan the final steps of the transitional period and prepare for the national elections scheduled for December 2026, as outlined in the peace Roadmap.

SPLM Secretary General Dr. Akol Paul Kordit said the parties agreed unanimously to amend key provisions of the Revitalised Agreement. These changes are aimed at removing remaining obstacles and creating a smoother path toward the upcoming elections.

The Secretary General added that the leaders decided to defer certain tasks, including the permanent constitution-making process and the national population census, to be addressed after the elections. This decision allows the country to focus on holding timely and credible polls.

Officials also said that the parties agreed to establish a committee composed of representatives from all political parties to discuss unresolved issues. A legal committee, to be chaired by the Justice Minister, will oversee necessary legislative amendments to support the electoral process.

The meeting highlights a renewed commitment by South Sudanese political leaders to ensure a peaceful power transition. Officials noted that this initiative is expected to strengthen democratic governance and support stability, peace, and cohesion across the nation as the country moves toward its next elections.
