(JUBA) – Chinese smartphone maker TECNO has opened its first flagship retail store in South Sudan, marking a rare private-sector investment in the country’s technology sector. The launch on January 13, 2026, reflects growing demand for smartphones as essential tools for communication, mobile money, and digital services despite challenges such as unreliable internet, power shortages, and limited digital payment systems.

Henry Khamis, TECNO’s brand manager in South Sudan, said the store demonstrates the company’s long-term commitment to the local market and improving consumer access to quality digital devices.

“Today, we are very excited to launch the TECNO Exclusive Shop in the Republic of South Sudan. This launch is important because it shows our commitment to quality and a premium experience for our customers,” Khamis said.

He explained that the store is part of a broader strategy to modernise smartphone retail and position South Sudan within the East African technology market, where digital infrastructure is more developed.

The store features an experience zone where customers can try out smartphones and accessories, a strategy aimed at increasing trust and understanding of digital devices in a market with lower digital literacy.

TECNO is showcasing a range of products, including smartphones, smart earphones, smartwatches, power banks, and data cables. Among the highlighted items are the TECNO Smartwatch Pro 2 and Smartwatch 3, both waterproof and designed for daily use, offering affordable wearable technology to local consumers.

Promoter Pascalina Kiden Ismail said customers are attracted to TECNO products for their combination of design, durability, and features suited to South Sudan’s digital needs.

“The Camon 40 Pro and Spark 40 Pro Plus are popular because they support photography, media use, and home connectivity. The Camon 40 Pro is waterproof and has a high-quality camera, making it convenient for customers who also connect their phones to their TVs at home,” she explained.

Telecom operator MTN said the store strengthens partnerships between device makers and network providers, a key factor in improving South Sudan’s fragile digital infrastructure. Baiti Haidar, an MTN representative, said the collaboration would expand access to connectivity and digital services beyond the capital.

“This partnership with TECNO is valuable for Juba and the wider country. The store will help strengthen collaboration and support TECNO’s growth,” Haidar said.

TECNO, a brand owned by Chinese technology group Transsion Holdings, was founded in 2006 and focuses on emerging markets across Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Latin America. The company offers affordable smartphones and accessories designed for durability and local user needs.
