(JUBA) – The South Sudan National Police Service has confirmed the arrest of three suspects linked to the armed attack on Major General Stephen Warikoz at his residence in Gudele Two, Juba, last month. Police said the arrests were part of a wider operation to track down those responsible for violent crimes in the capital.

According to the police spokesperson, Major General James Monday Enoka, the attack occurred on the evening of 3 July at around 7 p.m. Six armed men stormed the residence of Major General Warikoz, a serving officer, injuring him in the left leg and wounding two of his relatives before escaping with an unspecified amount of money.

Police investigations led to the capture of three suspects who were found in possession of firearms. One of the suspects resisted arrest, leading to a brief exchange of fire with officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Enoka explained that the suspect was shot in the leg during the confrontation to subdue him but later died in hospital from his injuries.

Authorities confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track down the other suspects who remain at large. Enoka urged the public to support the police by providing information that could help identify and arrest those still evading capture.

In a separate case, police also arrested two suspects accused of breaking into the home of former Chief Justice Chan Reec Madut in Juba’s Commercial Residential Area on 5 August. The incident happened in broad daylight at 2 p.m., when the suspects allegedly stole household property. The two suspects were arrested together with the exhibits linked to the crime, while another accomplice is still being pursued.

Enoka assured the public that all those arrested will face thorough investigation and be taken before a court of law. He emphasised that such serious crimes demand consistent police attention, adding that every effort will be made to bring those responsible to justice.

Major General Warikoz, reflecting on the July attack against him, appealed to parents to play a stronger role in guiding young people away from criminal activity. He linked the increase in gang related crimes to poor parenting and warned that unless families and communities take action, the problem will continue to grow.

He praised the Central Equatoria State Police for their swift response to the attack, while also expressing concern over the involvement of young people in violent crime.

“It is really unfortunate that these small boys are now becoming a threat to our community. This is sad and bad, and appropriate actions are going to be taken against them. As police, we are concerned with the safety and security of every South Sudanese,” he said.
