(KOSTIANTYNIVKA, DONETSK REGION, UKRAINE) – Ukrainian border guards said they repelled a large scale Russian assault near the city of Kostiantynivka in the Donetsk region, destroying attacking troops and military equipment during the attempted advance.

Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service released video footage showing the engagement. The operation was carried out by border guard personnel from the Phoenix unit.

According to the service, Russian forces launched a massed assault in the direction of Kostiantynivka. The attack involved infantry units supported by vehicles, armoured vehicles and tanks.

Border guards said the attacking Russian forces attempted to break through Ukrainian defensive positions in the area.

Ukrainian forces responded with defensive fire and strikes that halted the advance.

The State Border Guard Service said the Russian assault group was unable to reach its objectives.

Footage released by the Ukrainian authorities shows several pieces of Russian military equipment burning in open fields in the Donetsk region following the failed attack.

Officials said the Russian infantry and vehicles involved in the assault were destroyed or disabled during the engagement.

The Phoenix border guard unit took part in the operation and reported that the attempted Russian assault ended with the attacking forces forced to abandon the advance.

The engagement took place in the direction of Kostiantynivka, a city that remains close to the active front line in the Donetsk region.

Ukrainian officials did not immediately release detailed casualty figures but said the assault had been stopped and Russian equipment was left burning on the battlefield.

The State Border Guard Service said the footage released from the battlefield documented the failed assault and the destruction of Russian forces during the attempt to advance.
