(MOSCOW) — Prominent Russian state media figures Vladimir Solovyov and Margarita Simonyan have used a recent broadcast of “Sunday Evening With Vladimir Solovyov” to predict a global nuclear conflict and the potential end of civilisation. The discussion, which aired on the state owned Rossiya 1 channel, featured a grim assessment of the current geopolitical landscape, with both figures suggesting that the world is entering its final days.
During the broadcast, Solovyov recounted a recent visit to the frontline near Kreminna, Luhansk Oblast, where he met with the 45th Engineering Regiment. He described the environmental devastation of the area, noting that beautiful forests planted by hand had been reduced to “charred embers” by the war. Solovyov highlighted the plight of Russian veterans who had previously been told they were “not needed” during military reforms under former Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, but have now returned to service with a vastly different worldview. He claimed these soldiers struggle to reintegrate into civilian life in Moscow, as they find the domestic concerns of citizens—such as internet outages and issues with the Telegram messaging app—trivial compared to the realities of high technology warfare.
The Russian dictator’s media mouthpieces expressed deep concern regarding Russia’s technological lag. Solovyov admitted that the war is a “high tech” conflict where Western technologies are being used effectively against Russian forces. He lamented past economic decisions that deprioritised technological investment, stating that Russia is now forced to “catch up urgently” under severe economic pressure. The host pointed to a global shortage of optical fibre, noting that while Russia possesses the raw materials, it lacks the machinery to process them because China has raised prices. He criticised intermediate military structures for ordering obsolete equipment instead of listening to frontline commanders.
The conversation shifted to the Middle East, where Solovyov claimed Iran has successfully implemented North Korean subterranean defence strategies. He suggested that Donald Trump is openly discussing the use of nuclear weapons, predicting that if the United States employs such measures against Iran, it will trigger a global exchange of nuclear strikes. Solovyov characterised the current state of Europe and Ukraine as “pure Satanism” and “absolute evil,” while Simonyan compared the modern era to the late 15th century, suggesting the discovery of America was a precursor to the end of the world. Simonyan, the head of RT, concluded by expressing hope that Russia could watch the “Sodom and Gomorrah” of the West burn from a safe distance while “snacking on pickled gherkins.”
