(JUBA) – The Ministry of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services has pledged to ease the financial burden on mobile and internet service providers while ensuring more affordable services for the public.
The announcement followed a meeting on Thursday between Minister Ateny Wek Ateny and Philippe Hanna, the CEO of Zain South Sudan, to discuss the country’s high internet and communication rates.
Minister Ateny emphasised that internet access is a human right and that South Sudanese citizens deserve rates that allow them to communicate freely, access education, and conduct business online. He noted that reducing costs benefits both consumers and service providers, as the market includes over five million mobile and internet users nationwide.
The Minister stated that lower prices could encourage increased usage, enhance economic activity, and improve digital inclusion. He encouraged service providers to work with the government to create pricing models that are fair, sustainable, and accessible to all users.
Zain CEO Philippe Hanna welcomed the discussion, highlighting the importance of collaboration between regulators and providers to ensure a balanced approach that supports the industry while making internet services affordable.
The Ministry indicated that it is exploring policies to lower operational costs for service providers while expanding network coverage to underserved areas.
The goal is to ensure that South Sudanese citizens can access reliable and affordable connectivity, supporting education, commerce, and broader social development across the country.
