(YEI COUNTY) – Access Radio 88.8 FM has officially launched online digital broadcasting, marking a major step in the expansion of community media in South Sudan. The move announced on Friday, 7 November 2025 allows listeners to stream all programmes through the station’s new digital platform at www.radioyei.org.

Station Manager Johnson Poru Hillary said the decision to move into digital broadcasting is aimed at reaching wider audiences across South Sudan and beyond. He described the initiative as a milestone that will strengthen access to civic education, public information, and community engagement both locally and internationally.

“This great development is for the people of Greater Yei including Lainya, Morobo and Kajo Keji counties and for audiences in other parts of South Sudan as well as regional and international spaces,” Poru said.

He added that the transition to online broadcasting will help young people appreciate the role of technology in improving decision-making, learning, and empowerment.

“Through this digital platform, we can promote peacebuilding, raise awareness on gender-based violence, strengthen human rights, encourage good governance, and support initiatives in agriculture, business, education, health, and environmental management,” he said.

Poru called on listeners, especially those in rural areas and in the South Sudanese diaspora, to follow live programmes through the station’s website and social media pages. “Access Radio now belongs to everyone, wherever they are,” he said.

The launch has been welcomed by listeners both within South Sudan and abroad. David Taban, a regular listener based in Rhino Refugee Camp in Uganda, said the online service has reconnected him to home. “I am happy because I can now listen to Access Radio online and follow information from Yei. It helps us in the refugee camps to keep updated on peace, reconciliation, and development in our home areas,” he said.

Another listener, Alikaya Modi, expressed similar excitement. “I am listening live from Juba on my smartphone. We are proud of Access Radio for embracing technology and innovation,” she said.

Access Radio, headquartered in Yei County, Central Equatoria State, is an independent community station that broadcasts programmes focusing on peace, education, health, agriculture, environment, local governance, and youth empowerment. It has become a key source of information for communities in the Greater Yei region.

The digital expansion makes Access Radio the first community radio station in the Greater Yei region to stream live broadcasts online, giving it a unique advantage in connecting communities within South Sudan and those living abroad.

The station’s online editor said the move could also open up new business opportunities for advertisers, NGOs, and local entrepreneurs seeking to reach wider audiences through digital platforms.
