(WARRAP) – Athokbeek FC secured a 1-0 victory over Pan Nyok FC in a gripping final match on Thursday, clinching the title at the Twic County peace tournament. The event, aimed at promoting reconciliation in the aftermath of local conflicts, saw Deng Ajiing net the winning goal in the 92nd minute for Athokbeek FC, shattering a defensive stalemate and averting a potential penalty shootout. Spectators at Freedom Square in Kuajok erupted in jubilation as the final whistle blew.

The tournament, organised by local authorities, served as a platform to nurture unity following the discord between the Twic and Dinka Ngok communities of Abyei over the contested Aneet area two years ago. In a bid to restore peace, President Salva Kiir enforced a ceasefire last year and dispatched military personnel to patrol the border.

Paul Mayen, the secretary of the Warrap State local football association, emphasised the tournament’s significance in fostering peace and reconciliation.

“This initiative is pivotal in addressing the conflicts between Twic and Abyei,” Mayen remarked. “We stand in solidarity with Governor Bol Wek in promoting harmony amongst the communities.”

Deputy Governor Aluel Garang of Warrap State extended her congratulations to the victorious team and allocated 5 million South Sudanese pounds to be distributed among both competing teams and the tournament organisers. “Kudos to Akuar Athokbeek for their triumph in the peace tournament,” Garang commended. “Your exemplary display of unity reflects the spirit of peace within the Twic community.”

Athokbeek FC’s coach, Thomas Mauach, acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by Pan Nyok’s team. “It was a tactical encounter with both sides adopting a defensive strategy,” Mauach noted. “I commend the resilience of Pan-Nyok, but through divine intervention, we emerged as champions.”

The goal scoring hero, Deng Ajiing, lauded the match as a “great and remarkable game.”

“I entered the field with a determination to lift the cup,” Ajiing expressed. “Today, that dream became a reality.”

Although disheartened by the defeat, Pan Nyok’s coach, Ngor Malual, lauded the unwavering support of their fans.

“While the expectations pointed towards a victory for Pan-Nyok FC, fate favoured Athokbeek in claiming the title,” Malual admitted. “Our supporters stood by us throughout the tournament, and for that, I am truly grateful.”
