(JONGLEI STATE) – Governor of Jonglei State, Dr. Riek Gai Kok, has secured national support to expand and improve road infrastructure across the state. The Governor, accompanied by State Minister of Housing and Land, Hon. Jacob Mayom Chol, met with the National Minister of Roads and Bridges, Hon. Peter Lam Both, to advance the initiative on December 18, 2025.
Governor Riek congratulated Hon. Peter Lam Both on his new role and outlined the ongoing work to rehabilitate roads connecting all nine counties of Jonglei State. The programme is already improving access and travel for communities across the region.
The project is being carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Roads and Bridges and the World Food Programme (WFP). Hon. Peter Lam Both assured that the Ministry will provide technical support, supervision, and dedicated engineers to ensure the projects are completed efficiently. He stressed the Ministry’s commitment to modernising and expanding road infrastructure across South Sudan.
The meeting also highlighted the strategic importance of the Bor–Malakal highway. Specific focus was placed on the sections from Bor to Gatdeng and from Gatdeng to Malakal. Hon. Peter Lam Both promised regular updates on progress along this key route.
Governor Riek expressed appreciation on behalf of the people of Jonglei State, noting that improved roads will enhance connectivity and support economic growth across the state. Both leaders emphasised that collaboration between state and national authorities is essential for long-term development in South Sudan.
