Ukrainian Forces Strike Rare Russian S-300VM Missile System Near Mariupol
(MARIUPOL, DONETSK OBLAST) – Ukrainian forces have successfully targeted a rare Russian S-300VM surface to air missile (SAM) system near Mariupol, marking the first recorded strike on this specific variant during the conflict. Video footage shared yesterday depicts an air strike on the 6300 VM launcher, which was reportedly fully loaded at the moment of impact. Although the system was not deployed and appeared to be in the process of being concealed within a treeline with its launcher folded away, the direct hit likely resulted in a catastrophic secondary detonation of its missiles.
While the absence of a spotter drone prevented immediate confirmation of total destruction, military analysts suggest the system is certainly heavily damaged. The S-300VM, introduced in 2013, is a sophisticated and uncommon upgrade of the S-300V. It is specifically engineered to intercept ballistic missiles, though it retains the capability to engage cruise missiles and aircraft. Notably, the VM variant possesses twice the operational range of its predecessor.
The presence of this advanced system near Mariupol suggests the protection of high value Russian assets, such as a major ammunition dump or a senior officer headquarters. Its deployment may also indicate an attempt to secure flight routes against Ukrainian Neptune or long range missiles. The strike also revealed at least two additional elements of the S-300 battery nearby, including a second launcher and a utility support vehicle.
The loss of a rare and highly capable S-300VM represents a significant setback for the occupying forces’ air defence architecture in the region as the Russian dictator continues to push older mid range SAM systems forward to plug defensive gaps.
