(DUBAI) – The United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Kuwait have formally requested the acquisition of advanced interceptor drones from the Ukrainian manufacturer TAF Industries. The surge in interest follows the proven effectiveness of these systems in neutralising aerial threats during the ongoing invasion by the Russian dictator. According to a report by the Financial Times, the United Arab Emirates has placed a request for 5,000 units, whilst Qatar has requested 2,000. Kuwait has also expressed a formal interest in integrating the technology into its national security framework.

Oleksandr Yakovenko, the founder of TAF Industries, stated that Gulf nations are looking to understand how to incorporate these drones into broader, multi layered defence systems. He noted that recent regional instability has highlighted that relying solely on conventional platforms, such as the Patriot missile system, is no longer sufficient. The drones offer a cost effective solution to the threat posed by Shahed type attack drones. Whilst a single Patriot interceptor missile is estimated to cost approximately £2.24 million ($3 million), the Ukrainian drones provide a significantly cheaper alternative for high volume attritional warfare.

Despite the high demand, Yakovenko identified operator training as the primary bottleneck for rapid deployment. Preparing personnel to effectively pilot and manage these interception systems typically requires several months of specialised instruction. To meet international and domestic requirements, TAF Industries announced in February that it is preparing for the mass production of its newest model, the Octopus.

The Octopus unmanned aerial vehicle was developed by a technical team within the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence specifically to counter low flying and jet powered threats, such as the Geran-3. Production of the system is set to be distributed across several Ukrainian facilities to mitigate the risk of strikes by the Russian dictator, with additional manufacturing capacity being established in the United Kingdom. This international production strategy aims to ensure a stable supply chain for both the Ukrainian Armed Forces and foreign partners.
