(DONETSK REGION, UKRAINE) – Ukrainian border guard units reported repelling a large Russian assault attempt on the Kostiantynivka axis in eastern Ukraine, destroying multiple vehicles and armoured platforms advancing towards Ukrainian defensive positions.
According to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, Russian forces launched a massed attack involving infantry supported by vehicles, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks moving towards Ukrainian positions in Donetsk region.
Ukrainian officials said the Russian assault group attempted to advance under the protection of heavy armour, expecting that Ukrainian defenders would lack sufficient resources to strike every target.
However the outcome proved predictable, according to Ukrainian border guard units involved in the engagement.
The border guard service said a wide range of Russian targets were destroyed during the attack.
Tanks and armoured vehicles were left burning in open fields across Donetsk region. Russian vans and other vehicles were destroyed and reduced to wreckage.
Ukrainian officials said the Russian assault troops involved in the attack were also dispersed during the engagement.
The operation was carried out by the Phoenix border guard unit, which is part of Ukraine’s defence forces operating on the front line in eastern Ukraine.
According to the State Border Guard Service, Russian attacking forces have little chance of success in areas where the Phoenix unit is operating.
