Francis Amin has been chosen as the new president of the South Sudan Football Federation (SSFF), prevailing over incumbent General Augustine Maduot in a significant vote on Friday.
In the election held on Friday, Amin secured 26 out of 38 votes, while Maduot received 12. Following his victory, Amin expressed gratitude to his supporters in a concise message on Facebook, stating, “We have emerged victorious. Thank you.”
Having previously served as the SSFF president from 2017 to 2021, Amin ran his campaign on a promise to revive football development in the nation. His term as president will continue until 2029.
Maduot, who led the federation for the past four years, accepted defeat and assured his continued involvement in football. “This loss will not drive me away from the sport,” he affirmed.
Makur Majok and Deng Abdelrahman Aguer have been elected as first and second vice presidents, respectively.
Akol Panchol, representing the Bor Football Association, expressed optimism about Francis Amin’s presidency, anticipating reforms in South Sudanese football. “We supported Francis with the belief that he will introduce positive changes, including addressing budget concerns for our association,” Panchol noted.
On the other hand, Ibrahim Riak, a supporter of outgoing president General Augustine Maduot, congratulated Amin on his victory, acknowledging the democratic and transparent nature of the election process.
Background on Amin
Amin, a successful businessman and the SSFF’s second-ever president, oversaw South Sudan’s attainment of full FIFA membership and the commencement of World Cup qualification campaigns during his previous tenure. However, his administration faced criticism for the lack of progress in renovating Juba National Stadium, despite FIFA’s financial support.
