(KUAJOK COUNTY) – Officials from the Department of Industry and Mining have raised serious safety concerns following a joint field visit to Miibior mining site in Warrap State. The inspection, carried out over the weekend, revealed that the condition of the site poses risks to surrounding communities and their livestock.
The team reported that exposed pits and unstable terrain around the mining fields could cause accidents and long term environmental damage if not addressed. The officials urged all companies currently involved in extraction activities, including those dealing with marram, sand, gravel, aggregates and Carmine Red stones, to immediately fence off their operations.
Authorities stressed the importance of strict adherence to safety standards and regulatory guidelines. They said that safeguarding communities, protecting livestock and preserving the environment must remain a central part of mining operations.
Miibior is regarded as an economically significant area because of its deposits of minerals. In addition to common construction materials, the site is rich in iron ore, lead and manganese, which are considered important for South Sudan’s industrial development.
The government said it will continue to monitor the site to ensure mining companies comply with regulations. Officials say enforcement of safety protocols will be stepped up and regular inspections will be conducted.
For South Sudan, mining is viewed as a sector with potential to diversify the economy beyond oil. However, recent findings at Miibior show that rapid growth without proper safety controls could create risks for both local communities and the industry itself.
