(JUBA) – South Sudan and Kazakhstan have formally established diplomatic relations, marking a new chapter in the countries’ international engagement. The agreement was signed by Kairat Umarov, Kazakhstan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and Cecilia Adout Majok Adeng, South Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the UN.

Kazakhstan officially recognised South Sudan on 15 July 2011, following the country’s declaration of independence. The newly signed communiqué sets the framework for bilateral cooperation while reaffirming both countries’ commitment to international law, the UN Charter, national sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

Both parties emphasised the importance of developing mutually beneficial economic and trade cooperation. Kazakhstan highlighted its growing engagement with African states and expressed interest in strengthening ties with South Sudan through trade, investment, and multilateral partnerships.

Prospects for cooperation within the Group of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC) were also discussed. The parties highlighted the potential use of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route to improve access to African markets, which could support trade growth and logistics development in South Sudan.

The discussions further covered the multilateral agenda. Both countries confirmed alignment on key global security issues and expressed support for enhanced cooperation within the United Nations framework. Peacekeeping efforts, including participation in the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), were also reviewed, with both sides underlining the need for stability, dialogue, and progress in the country’s peace settlement process.
